Spirulina as an antioxidant
The high amount of beta-carotene in spirulina - estimated to be 10 times that of carrots - means it has the ability to neutralise and prevent free-radical damage in the body. Spirulina to prevent cancer?
A study conducted in India found that daily consumption of spirulina slows down the growth of oral cancer. This was observed in 20 out of 44 study subjects.

Spirulina as nourishment
Malnutrition is a major health problem throughout the world, and one of the hardest hit groups are children in developing countries.In Afreca alone, more than 30% of deaths of children under five are due to malnutrition.
A study carried out at the Centre Medical in St. Camille, Burkina Faso, in western Africa, involved 550 malnourished children under the age of five. The children were divided into four groups and given one of the following :

This study confirmed an earlier one conducted in vitro to determine the connection between spirulina and the production of cytokines.

Spirulina as an anti-hypertensive
Scientists at the National Autonomous University of Mexico carried out a study to access the effects of spirulina on glocose, serum lipids, amino transferase and blood pressure. A total of 36 subjects between the ages of 18 and 65 were given oral spirulina supplements for six weeks. At the end of the study period, spirulina demonstrated a hypolipernic effect ( the ability to reduce blood lipid leve;s) as well as the ability to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The UAE will be home to a spirulina farming project, the first of its kind in the Middle East, to be overseen by a United Nations body fighting against malnutrition across the globe.

The plan is to cultivate spirulina, the blue green algae known to be a rich source of energy and nutrients, for local consumption and export to poor African countries.

Remigio Maradona, Director General of the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition, told Khaleej Times the farm covering a square kilometre had been backed by a $1 million donation.

"A philanthropist has offered one kilometre square of land on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi border for the farm. We are in the proses of finalising the donation" he said.

Maradona was in the UAE recently to seek local collaborations for the institution.

Cousin of the football legend Diego Maradonna, Remigio is the leading ambassador of the organization that is the Permanent Observer for the UN Economic and Social Council.

Though spirulina is usually grown in more temperate climates, special arrangement such as shade will be made to enable the mass production of the algae in the UAE.

In the cultivation of spirulina, Maradonna said, water is recycled back to the ponds. "So the only loss of water is through evaporation."

He said the algae, sold in powder and tablet form as a dietary supplement in rich countries, could be ready for harvest in just a month and a half. " An area of 1,000 square metres shall produce six to eight kilograms of spirulina per day. The supply from UAE farm can be used for local consumption and also for poor countries especially in Africa."

Asked about the need to address the issue of malnutrition in the UAE, Maradonna said," Malnutrition is there everywhere, but in different forms. Obese people can also be malnourished. Junk food will not give them the needed supply of vitamins and nutrients."

A 2007 study published in Japan had found that 36 volunteers taking 4.5 grams of spirulina per day, over a six weeks period, exhibited significant changes in their cholesterol and blood pressure. The study found the intake of the algae lowered their total cholesterol, increased the good (HDL) cholesterol, lowered triglycerides, and lowered high systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Maradonna said spirulina should be explored as a way to fight H1N1 virus or swine flu.

Spirulina's immuno-stimulant and anti-viral properties has been successfuly utilised and scientifically documented in various viral pathologies ranging from influenza to HIV/AIDS.

"It is already proven that spirulina, if consumed in a daily basis, can enhance the human immune system and fight off most of the viruses. Therefore it is imperative that the international scientific community and policy makers explore the use of spirulina in order to deal with the cases of H1N1," he said.

IIMSAM propagates the message that a little spirulina consumed on a daily basis fulfills the daily nutritional requirements of a human body, and counters various pathologies associated with malnutrition.

A CAMEL that walks for days without water is common knowledge but did you know that a giraffe can walk longer than a camel without water?

Hundreds of interesting and unusual facts about water are being displayed at Elken’s H20: Did You Know… Show at the Elken Convention Centre in Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur from now until Aug 16.

This unique show aims to not only create awareness on the importance of water but to also educate Malaysians on how they can play a role in preserving this precious commodity.

“The Elken H20: Did You Know... Show is not only educational but also innovative and fun as it will take visitors on a historical, geographical and scientific journey.

"It will also give Malaysians a deeper insight as to what water is all about, its importance to one’s health and how we can play an important role in preserving this precious resource,” said Elken Bio Pure’s Water Quality Association (WQA) certified water specialist and consultant, Michael Long.

From the wonders of the planetary system, the journey continues to the desert where visitors will enter the ocean realm and discover amazing facts on ocean creatures while trying to find strange creatures that hide in plain sight under the sea. The discovery will lead visitors to Earth’s sources of water and why water is plentiful;
yet ‘useful’ water can be so scarce.

“They will then be taken into a dark-pre-historic cave to experience underground sources of water and maybe even have a dinosaur sighting or two,” Long added.

Visitors will also have the chance to enhance their knowledge on the relationship between humans and water.

“Inquisitive guests will have a chance to play CSI and analyse the characteristics and properties of water in a special water lab. The water journey ends with how each individual can make a difference and the public is invited to make a commitment to conserve water by signing on a water conservation pledge wall.”

Nicole's Story

I'm here sharing a story about Malaysian, my eldest sister, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis on 1997. Since then, she lost part of her eyesight.
